Kanwal Qayyum, 29 years old, was permanently deformed after a friend threw sulfuric acid on her face while she was sleeping, the Daily Mail reports. Kanwal lost her nose from her friend’s attack.
According to the report, Kanwal’s friend attacked her because Kanwal wanted to become an air hostess or a flight attendant. Her friend didn’t want her to pursue the career. Surgeons worked with restoring Kanwal’s facial features for about a decade now.
Kanwal decided to share some of her photos showing the progress of her facial reconstruction. Surgeons are working to rebuild her nose by using tissue from her thigh.
Dr. Asim Shahmalak, from Manchester, traveled to Karachi to create two new eyebrows and new eyelashes for Kanwal. Dr. Shahmalak utilized her hair from the back of her scalp in order to complete the creation. Kanwal used black markers to draw her eyebrows.
Dr. Shahmalak is famous for his remarkable work of restoring Calum Best’s hairline and self-esteem through hair transplant at Crown Clinic. The doctor is one of the selected surgeons in the whole world who can perform eyelash and eyebrow transplants.
Kanwal said, “I cannot thank the doctor enough - he has completely transformed my face and I love my new eyebrows and new eyelashes.”
Dr. Shahmalak said, “Kanwal is one of the bravest women I have ever met. The surgeons have done a remarkable job completely rebuilding her features and I was delighted to be able to help with her eyebrows and new eyelashes.
The doctor continued, “It was wonderful to hear how she has turned her life around, found happiness and got married. She is now having her nose remodeled and making amazing progress every time I meet her. It has been so rewarding to be part of her recovery.”
Kanwal had another session with Dr. Shahmalak again while he was on a mission in Pakistan las week. He named seven new people that he’ll provide aid with free hair transplants.
Dr. Shahmalak used his own money to help Kanwal and five other women two years before. He spent almost $60,000 from his own pocket. One of the women that he helped was a victim of acid attack after she turned down a man’s marriage proposal.
Dr. Shahmalak said, “I wept when I heard these women's stories. Being doused with acid because you refused a man's marriage proposal - people were treated better in the Middle Ages.
“Helping to rebuild their faces is some of the most rewarding work that I do. Just seeing their smiles after the surgery makes it all worthwhile.”
Dr. Shahmalak was born in Karachi. He moved to the UK after he became a doctor. Kanwal may have a long journey ahead of her, but we believe it’ll be worth it for her in the end.
