Kevin Breen, 44 years old, found himself losing all of his limbs after a strep throat infection had gone wrong. Kevin, who’s a father of three children, had to have both of his feet and hands amputated because of the infection, the Daily Mail reports.
Kevin began feeling pain and symptoms similar to flu approximately two days after Christmas last year. What he was having wasn’t cold or flu, but a severe and life-threatening infection.
Kevin was immediately taken to the hospital near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Doctors had encountered some difficulty in locating what was wrong with Kevin’s body.
When his body was ran through a CT scan, doctors found out that Kevin’s stomach was brimming with at least one and a half liters of pus. Doctors immediately thought that he might have had a puncture in one of his organs or a ruptured ulcer.
While doctors worked endlessly to diagnose his condition, Kevin’s health and body started to deteriorate.
Blood stopped streaming down to his limbs, which meant that the flesh of his hands and feet to completely turn black, rot, and die. Doctors then realized that Kevin might have streptococcal infection, which they later found out was true after tests.
Kevin got infected by his son, three years old, who recently had strep throat. The infection had managed to travel from his throat into his stomach, which meant that his body had failed to fight the infection off.
Kevin was about to die, but thanks to his family and his GoFundMe page, he managed to pull through and recover. Just without any of his limbs.
Julie, Breen’s wife, told Wood TV, "Life is forever going to be different. But different doesn't necessarily have to be bad. It's just going to be what we make it and we just have to figure it out, figure it out for our kids. Dad's going to have cool hands, Dad's going to have cool feet. We have to be positive."
The GoFundMe page says:
Kevin, Julie, Lilly(14), Bella(4), and Blake(3) are forever grateful for all of their family and friends who helped them get through this time. The amount of prayers lifted up, no doubt kept Kevin alive. They have a very long journey ahead, with many unknowns. Please continue to pray and they will continue to be thankful for all that they still have. Life will forever be different, but different doesn't have to be bad.
