Especially recently, is seems like there are lot of aspects of the public school systems that are frustrating parents. Whether it’s stressful standardized testing, being shamed for packing the “wrong” school lunch, forgetting lunch money, or some strange Common Core homework assignment, lots of moms and dads are getting fed up with what their kids have to go through just to pass an elementary school class.
Jenn Morrison Douglas has a daughter in 4th grade, and while working on her homework, the young girl encountered a particularly bizarre Common Core math question.
“In high school, Frank, Mike, George, and Ron each went out on a total of 4 dates with 4 different girls.” the math problem read. “The second time Frank dated Rose and George dated Kay. The third time Mike dated Mary and Ron dated Louise. The fourth time, George dated Louise and Ron dated Kay. For each of the four times, tell which girl dated which boy.”
If that isn’t enough to give you a headache, try reading it as a 4th grader! We’re not sure if Jenn’s daughter was left scratching her head by the challenging math of it all, or trying to understand why someone her age would have to deal with a math problem that’s all about dating multiple people.
Either way, Jenn’s little girl came up with the perfect response to the weird homework question.
Jenn’s daughter decided not to answer the question, but write in her own response. While there were a few misspellings, the witty response read: “I cant aswer this problem because my mom says acoording to girl code you shoudent [sic] date a friends x boyfriend".
Jenn was actually pretty darn proud of what her daughter wrote, and shared an image of the homework response on her Facebook page, writing: “My daughter's answer a problem on her 4TH GRADE math problem last night.#girlcodetrumpscommoncore”.
The image gained a lot of online attention- it was shared more than 100 times, and garnered dozens of comments from supportive parents who not only thought that a math problem about dating was far too inappropriate and unnecessary for a 4th grader, but also loved the young girl’s response.
“this is the cutest thing ever, and totally agree ! this girl is going to be a great friend” one person wrote.
“She's a smart girl. She shown how much she listens to her mother and values mom's talks. She should get a point for that answer.” wrote another.
“Dating should not be inclusive in a core math curriculum! Let's concentrate more on social sciences and other areas, and I will say this the girl has integrity though that's for sure!” one commenter said.
What do you think of the homework question and Jenn’s daughter’s response?
