In the study, participants engaged in four 20-minute meditation practices. Researchers then touched the participants' calf with a piece of metal that was hot to the touch--about 120 degrees. Those who had meditated reported that it was, on average, 40 percent less painful and 57 percent less uncomfortable than before their practice.
