When starting a new workout, it’s easy to overwork or hurt yourself, all with the intention of getting fit. Who better to remind us to take care of ourselves than Dr. Oz? Here are his tips and and tricks to staying healthy while getting in shape!
- Set realistic (actually realistic!) goals for yourself. Dr. Oz says that a healthy attitude is just as important as a healthy workout routine. If you’re just starting out, don’t try to run ten miles in the first day, or do the most advanced form of tree pose. Pushing yourself too hard is just as bad as not pushing hard enough, he says. “Perseverance and positivity will help you reach your health achievements much easier and sooner than desperation and disappointment,” Dr. Oz said in his article. So true!
- Rest. You may feel like you need to work out every day just to stay fit, but it’s actually healthier to take a day off every once in a while! Rest is just as important as working hard, says Dr. Oz. This allows your body some time to recover from your workout routine. Without rest, you'll tire yourself out and you’re at higher risk for injury. Shape Magazine recommends that beginner exercisers take a rest day every two days, and that those who are experienced athletes or those who have been working out for a long time should take a rest day at least once a week.
- Use proper technique in your workout. This one is so important! Dr. Oz recommends consulting with a personal trainer if you’re not sure that you’re not doing something correctly. Many gyms have complimentary personal training services, and even one session with a trainer can help prevent serious injury and make sure you get the most out of your workout.
- Eat Healthy! Here, Dr. Oz recommends a balance diet. Not any of those fad diets, but a diet balanced with “fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean sources of protein like fish or tofu.”
- Get your fill of omega-3 fatty acids. Why omega-3 fatty acids? Dr. Oz claims that these “help with some aspects of athletic performance.” This is true, but even better, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and even depression!
