Doctors were horrified to find that a young woman’s unexplainable nausea and stomach pain had been caused by a condom that made its way into her appendix.
As The Daily Mail reports, a 26-year-old woman had to be rushed to the hospital after experiencing tenderness, nausea, and pain on the right side of her pelvis.
Scans from the Cameron hospital showed that the woman’s abdomen had filled with so much fluid that doctors thought her appendix might burst.
Immediately, the woman was sent into emergency surgery to remove what doctors assumed was an infected appendix, but they were all in for a shocking surprise.
Just as they were about to cut out the infected organ, the surgeons found something disturbing: a condom.
“We blindly dissected the appendix and found an incomplete piece of rubbery material which was consistent with a condom,” said the doctors, describing the case in the Journal of Medical Case Reports.
As it turns out, when the woman was asked about the bizarre mishap, she admitted that she had accidentally swallowed an entire condom at least two weeks prior to the hospital visit.
The woman explained that she didn’t seek medical attention because she had found pieces of the condom in the toilet after she used the restroom, so she assumed it had already passed through her system.
Doctors now believe pieces of the condom were stuck in her gastrointestinal tract and ended up getting caught in her appendix, which triggered the infection and extreme inflammation.
